Second diary entry: Life after The Grammys

Tuesday, March 30/04

I’m on a plane to Vancouver to rehearse for the Junos this Sunday, April 4 (we’ll all fly from there to Edmonton 2 days before the show), and I finally know the liberation of having a laptop. Now I’m one of those airport laptop people. I have named him Monty. So, Monty and I were sitting here, after listening to Afterglow again, after the hot meal, after the in-flight movie, (Lost In Translation, it's just ending, I'd seen it but I watched it again, what a good film), wondering what to do with ourselves and we decided to write in.

I know I’ve been slow to get a groove going with my Sarah tour Blog, but now that Monty’s in the picture, there will be many more entries. Here’s what happened after the Grammys:

I went home and kept recording the new album with Thomas, and then on March 5 I flew to New York to meet up with Sarah et al to perform the second single from Afterglow, “Stupid”, on Regis and Kelly, Last Call with Carson Daly and Conan O’Brien.

In the interest of tour privacy I will not reveal the name of the fancy hotel we stayed at, but I will say, the personalized stationery with business cards reading, “Kathryn Rose In Residence” received upon check-in was a nice touch.

When we did Regis, a fairly weird thing happened. As soon as the cameras turned off, Regis turned to me, pointed to Sarah’s mic and said (imagine his accent), “One day... that’ll be you. Mark my words!” I quickly experienced a few reactions:
1) surprise at being spoken to directly by Regis;
2) a brief feeling of flattery;
3) a jolt of reality at the thought that he probably says that to all the girls, followed closely by:
4) fear, as I wondered if Sarah heard him.

Yep, she heard him, and she was looking straight at me but she was smiling, so I replied, “ That’s very nice of you to say”, but I was thinking, “Way to get me fired, dude.” And then the moment was over.

For the Carson Daly taping I still needed an outfit, and Sarah and her stylist called me up to Sarah’s room to have a look in her closet of borrowed designer clothes to see what might fit. After a number of ‘as if’ attempts, we settled on a $2,200.00 Dolce & Gabana corset dress and I have to say, getting to wear it even for an hour was pretty bitchin’.

I am particularly fond of Conan O’Brien and I dared myself to tell him so if I had the opportunity. After we performed the song, he came over and shook hands with the band on his way over to embrace Sarah. As he came my way I saw my big chance. As he shook my hand I said, “I love you” but sadly, he didn’t appear to hear me. I guess it’s because he’s so tall. I hope he got home from work that night, lay down in bed, was just about to fall asleep and thought, ‘hold on, did that chick say she loved me?’..... snore..... snore.......

Other fun things I did in New York that week:
-Going with Sarah, David Kershaw and Luke Doucet to the Chelsea Flea Market one day after rehearsing for the TV shows;
-Going to Soho with David Kershaw and Sean Ashby one morning before a taping to shop for gifts and clothing and such (I bought some really cute beaded Chinese slippers for super cheap);
-Sarah and Ash took us out for a band dinner one night. We had lovely food, amazing wine and some good band bonding. I recall waving my napkin in a circle over my head to prove a point, and whacking the waiter in the face to the amusement of our table;
-One night I went to a great little neighbourhood Bistro in the Village, called Arturo’s to visit my friend Chris Smets, who works there in between screenwriting and filmmaking. We first met in 1996 or so, when he was a music journalist in Toronto and interviewed me for an article. We remained in touch ever since. That restaurant has a lot of charm; check it out if you go to New York.

Immediately upon returning home, I resumed recording with Thomas, and I am happy to say that my 3rd solo album is now completely recorded and ready for Thomas to start mixing. We did it!

I must tip my hat and heart to Thomas for his ultra-organisation. He devised a very charming Thom-ish Chart of Album Completion on the wall of his studio, with the song titles and a series of corresponding check marks that became an ‘X’ as each song moved through the stages of pre-production, beds, lead vocals, backing vocals and overdubs. Photos of Thomas’ Chart and other studio shots of the making of the album will be up on my website shortly.

My husband and I capped off my time at home by throwing a party last weekend to celebrate my birthday, the completion of recording the album and to say goodbye to my friends before the big touring starts... as Dan Bryk would say, ‘good times!’ At the party I tried out one of the webcams we got as a wedding gift as a mode of communication for while I’m away. I had it set up in the corner of the living room like a live Speaker’s Corner. Now I have some great stills and movie clips of my friends that I can look at when I’m on the road and homesick.

Well, we’re over the Rockies now and I have a crick in my neck from typing in my Economy seat (one has to see oneself as First Class, darlings), so I will end here right now. Doubtless there will be new stories to tell from the Junos, so stay tuned!
