Redeyed & Bushy-Tailed

It’s been awhile since I wrote in.

I’m on a redeye flight from Vancouver to Toronto. We just did our last day today in the rehearsal space. I’m going home for 4 and 1/2 days while the crew moves the production into an arena. Then we’ll have one more week of full production rehearsals before the summer tour begins.

It won’t be long now before we climb on a tour bus. It’s been a few years since I "lived on a bus." Something to get used to, but it is actually easier than flying.

I recently bought a Larrive'e Parlour guitar. I got it today and I can’t tell you how happy I felt to see it and hold it. It's so tiny! The perfect size to take on tour. It’s the first decent guitar I’ve ever bought for myself. Until now I’ve done all of my songwriting with acceptable but unexceptional handmedowns and a variety of long term loaners from friends. I hope I write a lot of songs with it on tour.

I have a lot to do at home this week. Originally the main purpose of coming home on this short break was to be with my husband, but 2 days ago David’s grannie died, whom I was looking forward to meeting when the tour takes us to Scotland in October. Because she was very fond of David I’m glad that before she took a turn for the worse, she got to see some photos of our wedding in St Lucia. Apparently she was quite enamoured with the ocean view behind us. David flew to Scotland last night to attend the funeral, and will get home the day after I fly back to Vancouver, so we will be 2 ships passing... He is very sad and I wish I could be there with him, but it just wasn’t possible this week. He'll meet me in San Francisco to tour with me for a week.

And so: this week I will be filling my time with KR album related activity. I have a photo shoot this Friday for the artwork for my new CD. I will be working with Steve Payne who did such a fabulous job shooting me for my NOW Magazine cover. (The enhanced “My Little Flame” CD re-release features 2 shots from that shoot on the cover and tray card). We have an interesting concept in mind for the shoot this week. I look forward to seeing the results.

Naturally a photo shoot means I have a hair appointment and I’d better get a pedi and mani... sometimes being a girl is a lot of work. It's my own fault for secretly enjoying going glam.

In other news my house is for sale (we are renting). This could mean anything as it plays out. (Frightening images going through mind of David having to find us a new place to live and pack the whole house all by himself while I’m on tour). I did manage to convince my landlords not to hold the Open House this weekend so that I can be there to pack for a 2-month trip. “And right this way is the kitchen, you’ll see it’s quite a good size, even with Sarah McLachlan’s backup singer’s 5th load of laundry on the go...”

I’ve got to catch some shuteye on this redeye. We land at 6am or so. I have a shrink appointment at 11am . Haven’t seen her for 3 months. I booked a double, baby! Then I’m going to do a jingle session. A jingle house in Toronto where I sometimes work just happened to call me for when I’m actually going to be around, but if the client picks me for the final, they’ll have to record me with a “phone patch” from L.A. Haven’t done one of those before, that would be cool.

The sky is getting lighter. I’m almost in danger of losing a whole night’s sleep, so I’ll sign off.

(adding to this post on June 28/04):

Just got back to Vancouver. That was one hell of a busy "break". Got it all done though! I even got to go to a wedding of some dear friends. The photo shoot went very well. Photographer Steve Payne built a fake window with a view of a night sky for me to sit below and gaze out upon (similar to the setting in which I wrote all the songs on the new album). It looked lovely. My husband called me from Scotland and his accent was back. He was born there and had the accent as a child but lost it in Canada. A few days with his cousins and it came right back. He sounded adorable.

Tomorrow in rehearsal we get to see the set for the first time.

Off to bed,
KR.
