Leg 2 of Summer Tour... Losses: 2, Wins: still counting

August 10, 2004.

We had 6 days off at home last week. While at home:

David and I finally made thank you cards for our wedding guests and went through the proofs of the photos to make our wedding album; I had a romp with my friends’ Matthew & Ginette’s little girls Lily & Ruby who jumped all over me with not a stitch of clothing on (them, not me); had a picnic by Lake Ontario down the street from our house with my husband, my friends Vid & Cassio and (the very pregnant) Linda & Andres; saw my shrink; gave new pics for my website to my management and paid them their latest commission; did some work on the liner notes for my new album; was asked to be on an Ontario Arts’ Council Jury to help decide who gets grants this year for new albums but had to ask them for a raincheck due to conflicting tour dates; cooked food for the first time in months; saw my parents and brother and gave them trinkets from on tour (my dad loved the voodoo doll from New Orleans); went shoe shopping for alternatives to the high heels I’ve been wearing onstage, didn’t find any and then noticed that John Mayer was playing an in-store at Sam The Record Man, went in and got a hug and kiss and 2 minute visit with him; tried to get the awesome Hatch Show Print posters I bought in Nashville framed but changed my mind when the bill was going to be $575.00 (have to find a better deal); went to my favourite neighbourhood bar Mezzrow’s to give my friend Scott Dobson the George Jones playing cards. He was there with his friend Misty who was a host of the successful Canadian show “Bingo & A Movie” on the Aboriginal Peoples’ Television Network and she and I had a lot of fun talking about music and men and all kinds of things; and did some private things that shall remained unmentioned.

I am much refreshed but am exhibiting an uncharacteristic losing streak. On the flight to New York to rejoin the tour I left the book I am reading on the plane (“Me Talk Pretty One Day” by David Sedaris) in the seat pocket in front of me, and last night I left my cell phone charger in the dressing room at the arena. The book is a write off which is a drag because I was really enjoying it and only had 10 pages left to read. I bought it at the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco next to Vesuvio where Jack Kerouac used to hang out. Sedaris’ writing reminds me of my writing in this blog. If I was to write a novel, or book of prose of some sort, which some of my friends and family have suggested from reading my blog, the writing style might be not unlike his. The cell phone charger and I might be reunited later today at the venue if Hugo saw it at the last minute before leaving.

On the plus side, we had fun doing Good Morning America yesterday morning (Diane Sawyer looks like a foxier Martha Stewart to me), and our first concert of Leg 2 last night was really good (we should take 6 days off more often).

One benefit of all this travelling is being able to visit with people I otherwise rarely get to see. Last night my friends from New Jersey, Tom & Deb and their 10 year old son Daniel came to the show. I didn’t get to see their 16 year old daughter Hannah this time. The last time I saw those kids they were about 6 and 12, and I was on tour with Esthero. We played in Central Park. They all came to that show for a visit and walk in the park afterwards. For those who read the fine print, Tom is the brother of Jim Bish who has played saxes and woodwinds with me live and on my CDs. He played on my newest album too, which really is coming out soon! We’re just finishing up the artwork now. It was so nice to see them last night. I wish I had had more time to sit with them to hear about their lives now and to get Daniel telling me stories. He was looking up at me with his big blue eyes and curling lashes, as we recalled our previous time together making sculptures out of tin foil.

We have 2 hours left before checkout at this hotel and the drive to the venue for tonight’s show in Uniondale, NY. Then we drive overnight to Columbia, Maryland where my brother’s girlfriend Nola will be coming to the show tomorrow night.

On The Road, where some possessions slip through one fingers to be replaced or lived without and every day is similar to the one before unless you pay attention.

(PS: Hugo found my cell phone charger.)
